The Jewish cemetery
Near the Forester’s House lies the Tahara house, built in 1774. A bit further along the Uhlbergstrasse the Jewish cemetery bears testimony to Treuchtlingen’s once large Jewish community.
At first the Jews in Treuchtlingen didn’t have a synagogue of their own but shared a religious congregation with Pappenheim. Only in the 18th century was a synagogue erected in the modern-day Uhlengasse. In 1774 a plot of land was purchased at the foot of the Schlossberg (castle hill) where the Jewish cemetery is now located. Jews from Ellingen, Markt Berolzheim and Dittenheim were also laid to rest here. Furthermore the cemetery houses a memorial, based on a sketch by Franz P. Burger, a local artist. It commemorates the injustices which were inflicted on the local Jewish community during the Third Reich.
