Synagogue

In the middle of the 18th century a Jewish school was set up in Treuchtlingen. It was later extended and became a synagogue for the town’s large Jewish community. In 1780 a Ritual Bath (Mikwe) was built at the Synagogue and with it the first water tap in Treuchtlingen. Overnight on the 9th of November 1933, the “Night of Broken Glass” (“Reichspogromnacht”), the building was destroyed. A model of the synagogue can be found in the Museum of Folk Art and Life “Volkundsmuseum”. The first Jewish house owners are recorded as living in Treuchtlingen at the end of the 16th century. In 1860 the Jewish community was at its peak making up 16% of Treuchtlingen’s 1700 inhabitants. Until 1939 all Jews had left the town more or less voluntarily even though they had been respected citizens for centuries. Well over 50% of them were murdered in concentration camps.
