Town hall (“Rathaus”)

The town hall is situated on a prominent spot on the Hauptstrasse (the main street) on Rathausplatz (town hall square). The administrative building was the site of much change. The last years of the 19th century were very prosperous and the previous town hall was razed in 1891. In 1894 the new building with its three floors was inaugurated. The new renaissance style building is characterised by its pillars, columns, ledges, ornaments and crowning turrets. During the Third Reich there was no use for the gingerbread style “Zuckerbäckerstil” and all the ornaments were removed. To the side, a simple extension was added. During the renovation in the 1980s former elements of the building’s façade were rebuilt, although in a reduced form. The historical assembly hall with its rich ornaments on the wooden ceiling and the door ledges are original. The town hall roof also has a small clock tower with a visible glockenspiel.
