Experience nature and culture

Come join us on an historical tour of the spa town of Treuchtlingen which is located in the Altmuehl Valley national park. The circuit, with its 18 stops, begins at Saint Mary’s Church “Marienkirche” near the train station and is marked by the Treuchtlingen coat of arms.

Visitors will also gain insight into the history of the House of Pappenheim-Treuchtlingen and into the life of field marshal Gottfried Heinrich, who was made famous through Schiller’s drama “The Death of Wallenstein”. Interestingly a quote from the play, uttered by Wallenstein, “Therein I recognize my Pappenheimers” (Daran erkenn` ich meine Pappenheimer), is now a common German colloquialism.

As well as viewing a Roman villa (villa rustica) close to the town you will also visit the area’s most important landmark, Charlemagne’s dyke (Fossa Carolina) which is located in the village of Graben. Here visitors can view the huge ramparts and an expanse of water, which are the remains of a canal built by Charlemagne’s men in an attempt to connect the Main and Danube rivers some 1200 years ago.
